If you or anyone else have good ideas about how to get this across effectively to people in the West, I'd be willing to spend time off collecting stories remotely and locally. My own impressions are blown off as anecdotes.

To be fair, expecting someone who can't see a problem with USSR style socialism to emotionally connect with the spirit of melancholy, oppression and idle decay that lingers in our buildings and societies is too much.

True story. Tomorrow, it’s the 50y anniversary since the occupation of Czechslovakia in 1968. It had a terrible impact on life of two generations of Czechs and Slovaks.

I guess I’m in some sort of bubble, because I’ve never encountered these people that idealize the USSR. I assumed there are only a tiny number of ultra-fringe leftists that believed anything like that.

That said, a poor person in USSR or Cuba would be far more educated that a poor person in the US. Communism is bad; socialism is not, to the certain extent.
