Providence. So many of my clients are desperate for dev talent, and many slip up to Cambridge or down to NYC because they can't find enough here.

It's way way harder to get a job outside SF and NY, though. And you'll get paid less and less respect and be less flexible.
-
It’s actually way easier...

People are at the coastal cities to do frontier work. Those without experience are being offered 2X+ what you noted, plus stock. It’s not fiscally nor sociologically competitive, unless you can offer some Visas. Otherwise...

You will be paid twice as much and have slightly better job mobility than Dallas or Chicago. At 3-4 times cost of living. If there's something really cool you can work on there that's maybe worth it, but SV has a lot of license plate making jobs too.
-
Having lived in both those locations, I don’t miss anything about either. And as for the cost of living, despite what the news writes, any large city downtown isn’t off by much here.
-
If the city is worth the pay cut to you, whatever you think the amount is, then by all means. I'm equally unfond of San Francisco, let alone the Valley, but tastes vary.

You are entitled to express your opinions & perspectives in the USA, facts or not. I have no interest in “proving” my points on this, b/c they are a perspective that make sense only to me. Anything else, one can take at face value, or make critical inquires for themselves.

And they’re willing to pay you like a junior dev and treat you like a sysadmin! There’s not a talent shortage. Most places pay software engineers like crap and get crap engineers as a result.

Another fun fact: These days, software runs on computers without a human needing to be present, so remote work should be the default everywhere (outside a nuclear facility or other airtight situation).

But do those companies know how to manage software/people, or drive their devs insane?

The issue is that the frontier is not evenly distributed. There are few places where you can work on frontier things, which is still one of the attractions of those coastal cities.
