The pessimism surrounding technology right now feels both extremely prevalent and misplaced. So much incredible stuff is happening and everybody seems upset about it all.

Moving to a Samsung 9+. Just wondered. You have pretty great thoughts on many things, have any on the 9+?

IMO since Apple has lost most of its edge in the post-Jobs era the hardware is mostly a commodity and comes down to very small preferences that don’t matter much

I think a lot of people think tech = “BigTech” and that the interests and similarities of Big Tech and startups are more opposite than similar.

+1 for availability bias. Unfortunately good stuff doesn’t get much attention, even though a lot more good stuff is happening.

The pessimism is less about the technology... it’s about who runs the tech and how it’s being run. It’s been building up for many years with corrupt company cultures, lack of D&I, VC growth-at-all-costs model, lack of solving real world problems, income inequality, ethics etc.

It’s not really pessimism about the technology itself, it’s pessimism about who controls it and to whom it benefits.

Because it’s being used for evil under the disguise of good. See Facebook, Twitter and any other social media site that collects your data and sells it off (as just one example). We need an amendment that deals with technology.

The pessimism is not around technology. It is around the people guiding the technology and the narrative around it. Often times technology is being designed built or directed but not intentionally to serve us, it feels the other way around.

U forget that most ppl are not in tech. Cities like SF and New York are so much different than the rural Midwest. And we as a whole are forgetting what it means to be human. Today’s tech is exciting yet ppl are becoming more depressed

Technology today is awesome. What many startups use it for is rather pitiful though. 40M investment for a mobile dogshit pickup service, anyone?

I'm not a history buff, but it would be interesting to see how our current tech pessimism compared to, say, England during the industrial revolution

Luddite mentality is as old as the industrial revolution is. Technology is anything that was developed after you were born. And what humans don't understand they fear. It's not news to me.
