I spoke with the guy who originally invented this (ex-IKEA President). He called it DFL, design for logistics, the core mission was always cheap furniture and that being the North Star this was something they were willingly compromising on.

I don't think the consumer was the one who was suppose to benefit from flat packing. So it's a net positive return for the target - the company.

It makes me sad how often people, including myself, debate "hmmm parts for $99.97 or fully assembled table for $1295.99. I mean I did want to go to the farmers market on Sunday and this says it'll take anywhere between 2-13 hours to assemble."
