Working more than 40/h a week is less productive. (Engineering)

I’ll take the inverse position. No way you get a startup off the ground working only 40 hrs/week and anyone who says otherwise is lying.

I joined LinkedIn in 2003 at ~12 employees. Engineers worked 40-hour weeks, like clockwork, for the entire 2 years I was there. (I can't speak for non-engs, but my perception is that it was similar for them.)

That is the number one reason LinkedIn sold for $26 B whereas FB is worth $500 B.

There are countless examples of this, eg: @basecamp

I would bet a *lot* of money the founders of basecamp worked more than 40 hour weeks, though to admit it would be off brand

Regardless of Basecamp though, why do you think it’s impossible? Correlation between hours worked and productivity is not linear, you ignore diminishing returns

Of course it doesn’t. But I think we are not talking about 45 hours a week but rather 60+

Are you writing code for more than 6 hours or doing work that is less coding and more other stuff, like sending emails, researching and so on?

Depends on stage. Need to do LOTS of stuff that isn’t writing code.

I think that is more doable than coding for 10 hours. And most engineers loathe anything that is not coding.

At Altocloud all engineers did ~40 hours a week. BUT if anything went wrong everybody was on board to fix it - and more importantly, learn from it, so we didn’t have to work stupid again.
