That if San Francisco doesn’t get its act together or we figure out remote work we’re all going to lose the tech race with China entirely. Yes, I believe Silicon Valley’s position in the world relies upon fixing an incompetent city government.https://twitter.com/andrewchen/status/1025817195174080512 …

Either US “versus” China will be a colossal disruption or it will turn out a variant of Japan “versus” US and both will win but in ways decidedly different than anyone would have predicted. Remember this world view?…and today, Japan a clear #3 and strong, but very different.pic.twitter.com/wLjNxmD2qd

OK, I understand your problem definition. Thanks for clarifying. Would you recommend a strategy of market intervention or market liberalization by the SF city government?

Do you have a mental model for what losing the tech race looks like? I think at some point we're going to have multiple internets with modern tariff policy that prevent Asian tech co's from participating in the US, mirroring China's current policy.

Silicon Valley isn’t a city. There are lots of city and county governments involved in the greater Silly Valley area. The remote work part makes more sense.

Never mind that everyone forgots why Silicon Valley exists. 1.) Weather 2.) At Will Work State 3.) Inertia (see 1+2) So one city will neither make or break. That said, SF “should” be the set an example of what you CAN do. Not what you should avoid like the plague.

That’s a good point. Church land too. And the drift. Silicon Valley has always been lifted by gov work that comes from the proximity of what you mention.

I was raised and worked much of my life in the SF Bay. Tech is now the highest GDP but more GDP per worker than most industries. Therefore a smaller number of people proportionally. You don’t fix the Bay by marginally changing tech companies.

The goes for small things like trying to force workers to eat at restaurants (limiting free food aka SF proposal). It’s stupid to think you can hand sculpt an economy based partially on tech by sculpting tech companies.

Exactly. Unless you have a huge percent equity in your home (because you moved there in the 1990s or earlier, or were given equity by inheritance, or had career windfalls along the way), the cost of housing is ridiculous.

If Americans can’t innovate anywhere else besides a specific plot of dirt in Northern California, then it probably deserves to “lose the tech race to China.” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think it's unfair to put this all on SF. They have frustrating land use policies, particularly when it comes to the west side of the city, but they are at least densifying a bit in the downtown / SOMA areas. The bigger culprits IMHO are San Jose & suburbs like Palo Alto
