I finally subscribed to the Wall Street Journal and it makes me log in to view an article practically every time I try to read one. Miserable experience.

It is hardly worth subscribing as a result. Same experience with xfinity on mobile.

Is there a business reason? Are they that worried about “stealing” articles that it makes me do it every 24 hours?

So much this. They're offering me a free trial right now on terms I would happily take. But I know from past experience that cancelling it when it bumps to full price will be such a painful experience that's I'm not prepared to put myself through it.

The log-in for the iPhone app persists; I hardly ever have to re-log in on that. But on desktop and mobile browsers, it makes me re-log in every. single. time.

perhaps your browser/add-on is preventing one of its persistent/SSO cookie handoffs across related hosts; if in Brave see if you still have problem with ‘shields down’ on wsj/dowjones/etc domains

It is possible, indeed. Had a similar problem with a banking site, had to whitelist it in uBlock Origin (and checked also Privacy Badger and tracking protection.) It is hardo to reproduce and debug, so one may have to test by oneself.

That's why I get the print version. Uninterrupted old school experience, without weird ad targeting/tracking/log in issues.

Once again, piracy is less about wanting free stuff than it is about having a good user experience. Plex > Netflix because I never know when stuff I want to watch will just vanish.
