I’m still really struggling to understand why there’s so much emphasis right now on straws

While small in the overall global trash issue, environmental groups chose it as an easy specific issue to raise awareness around. Once done, they can move on to a larger issue. Specific and actionable, while also not so big as to be overwhelming is a perfect place to start 👌

I'd agree if I didn't participate in a beach cleanup in May. The number one item we picked up was straws.

Because people are emotional and anecdotal creatures, resistant to learning by data, and deeply impacted by images and personal experience (“I use straws all the time, and look at this 🐢 w/ a straw in its nose”).

It’s a way to have a “good feeling” about waste management, without doing anything meaningful about waste management. And inconveniencing lots of people and businesses in the process.

Listen to “The Last Straw” podcast from The Indicator by @planetmoney, they explain it pretty well. More or less, not using plastic straws won’t do a thing for the environment but it might help change our mindset.
