We’re going to try another experiment. We’re going to pay 10 people $1,000/month ($7,000 total) to attend Lambda School’s 7 month iOS + CS program. After you graduate you’ll pay 10% of salary for 4 years, only if you’re making $50k+, capped at $40k total.

I’m not knocking your program I simply asked if you take the 10% before or after deductions because that makes a bit of a difference. Most new grads of your program would not be able to get remote positions, (generally), so they would have to live near a tech hub.
-
Seattle, Denver, San Francisco, New York, etc. are expensive places to live. Meaning that they would most likely be paid more. So a lot of your graduates will most likely cap out at the 40k limit.
-
Ya, I just think your “can make it” metric is off. I was making ~$100k in SF two years ago, single earner, wife and two kids. Was saving $2k/month after taxes. Not easy at all. Incredibly difficult. But that’s how finances are for most ppl.
-
No way! I don’t believe you. Show us your tax returns.
I get it. My wife and I combined make over 200k but we never had any money. We started looking at where it was going. Stopped a bunch of BS we didn’t need, stopped eating at restaurants, etc. Now we save $4K+ per month. -
Completely apart from everything else, I will always
people for budgeting and saving. Way to go both of you
-
We started using YNAB. We were spending about $800/month on groceries and about $1200/month on eating at restaurants. Now we spend about $400 total per month on food.

In certain markets sure. But I know people that make 160k, work at Twitter and are struggling. You do realize that a dollar is not the same nationwide. Could I live on 45k in Detroit? Sure. Could I live on 45k in Silicon Valley? No way.

Surprising you find this surprising. 50k is the same number you would have thrown around 5+ years ago and yet the price of literally everything has skyrocketed since. Throw kids in the mix and we're in joke territory. Dunno why people don't get what's happening here...

Not with a single income for 2+ people, health care, and putting anything at all into savings, or even rarer, a retirement fund. USA is cruising for a major collapse.
