If you ever want to do Data Journalism (TM) you could pick one of the states where university employees work for the state and state employees wages are public and then do some fairly straightforward math; my estimate would be ~60% of costs are wages and 20% of those to teachers
-
Berkeley says 24% to teachers ( …http://compensation.universityofcalifornia.edu/payroll2016/table1-compensation-by-occupational-group-2016payroll.pdf … ) and 66% of budget goes to payroll/benefits ( …http://compensation.universityofcalifornia.edu/payroll2016/2016-annual-payroll-report-summary.pdf … ). I award myself a cookie for good estimates.

They know and don’t care

I think it's more accurate to state that many are aware but feel powerless to change it

My school's administration spent $4000 out of our student fund - a $50 fee each student paid each year specifically earmarked for campus life stuff and clubs... on a bunch of fireworks hardly anyone watched. It set the soccer field on fire which cost even more money to fix.

What would that revolt look like? I was upset with the way my university spent its money, but I was too focused on doing well in my classes to do much more that attend SGA meetings.

Do you know what the most common mental malady of a University president is? The Edifice Complex

1/ This is why I think community college is so beneficial. At least at my school most tuition seems goes straight back into student services and campus scaling, such as more parking and more accessible areas for the disabled. I'll be transferring to a uni in about a year and I'm

2/ not looking forward to the costs. I was privileged enough to be enrolled in early college program my junior year of high school with all expenses paid except books, and even there it would have been a small fortune had I not opted to use online resources.

Also now that administrators outrank professors 3:1, want that rock climbing wall and lazy river? YES! put another $2,500 on tuition. Want granite counter tops & luxury dorms that cost 2k/month? YES! Professors are forced and controlled by the evaluations now....
