Our current Tech industry is hella pretentious. So, say that you’re able to bypass the stigmas of not having a “real” degree, or “experience”, biased interviews that filter on “culture fit” and ability to solve riddles and land a $50k “entry-level” software engineering position.

Fantastic! Well done. Truly. The job’s in Boston. Magically, you have no moving costs and find a studio apartment that includes all utilities for $1500 per month (an almost unheard of bargain). It’s in Brighton, so you’ll need a monthly $85 train pass for the 40 min commute.

So... math time: Salary: $50,000 After taxes: $32,234pic.twitter.com/Q37V5jjcZU

Now, let’s subtract living costs... Annual take home: $32,234 After rent ($1500*12): $14,234 After phone ($70*12): $13,394 After internet ($40*12): $12,914 After food ($400*12): $8,114
Wow. Right?1 reply 1 retweet 5 likesShow this thread -
Boston is expensive... After living expenses: $8,114 We still have a 17% annual fee. 17% of $50K = $8,500 Uh. Oh. We are now -$386 in debt.
Damn, bro... we never even went out for a beer. We lived within our frugal AF budget and STILL came up short.2 replies 1 retweet 13 likesShow this thread -
So, yeah. Please, Do NOT fall prey to boot camp recruitment tactics like this one. It really IS too “good” to be true.

PS... this comment is also BS. Remember what I said about Tech culture being hella pretentious? If exceptions are made to give your “non-college degree, no experience, non-culture fit” self a shot. They will most definitely be low-balling that offer.https://twitter.com/austenallred/status/1017642889466146816?s=21 …

Yep! If that’s true, the repayment trigger should be much higher.

Agreed. If
@LambdaSchool is confident their graduates will earn $90K straight out of the program (without additional degree or professional experience), then they should raise the repayment trigger to $90K.https://twitter.com/austenallred/status/1017750496407244801?s=21 …elisabete.codes added,

“Oh no, what if someone moves to a rural city and purposefully only makes $50k to screw us!” Is such a weird take. For profit education is a scam.

It’s not people moving to a rural city, it’s people living in a rural city. Salaries and cost of living are lower there.
