Ohh no. This is a Crowley style crossroads demon bargain. 😳 Step into my office for a minute. Let’s break this down...https://twitter.com/austenallred/status/1017565091036708864 …

We're going to try an experiment. Our full iOS + Computer Science course (30 weeks) + a MacBook you can keep + free housing in San Francisco for the full 30 weeks. You pay $0 until you're making $50k+, then 17% of salary for 3 years, capped at $40k. We'll select 10 students.

Let’s say you are a low-income, minority candidate without a traditional 4-year college degree, trying to break into tech. This might “seem” like an amazing deal. But...

Our current Tech industry is hella pretentious. So, say that you’re able to bypass the stigmas of not having a “real” degree, or “experience”, biased interviews that filter on “culture fit” and ability to solve riddles and land a $50k “entry-level” software engineering position.

Fantastic! Well done. Truly. The job’s in Boston. Magically, you have no moving costs and find a studio apartment that includes all utilities for $1500 per month (an almost unheard of bargain). It’s in Brighton, so you’ll need a monthly $85 train pass for the 40 min commute.

Now, let’s subtract living costs... Annual take home: $32,234 After rent ($1500*12): $14,234 After phone ($70*12): $13,394 After internet ($40*12): $12,914 After food ($400*12): $8,114 😳 Wow. Right?

Boston is expensive... After living expenses: $8,114 We still have a 17% annual fee. 17% of $50K = $8,500 Uh. Oh. We are now -$386 in debt. 😐 Damn, bro... we never even went out for a beer. We lived within our frugal AF budget and STILL came up short.

So, yeah. Please, Do NOT fall prey to boot camp recruitment tactics like this one. It really IS too “good” to be true.

PS... this comment is also BS. Remember what I said about Tech culture being hella pretentious? If exceptions are made to give your “non-college degree, no experience, non-culture fit” self a shot. They will most definitely be low-balling that offer.https://twitter.com/austenallred/status/1017642889466146816?s=21 …

Yes, that is possible, but structuring it any other way is very confusing. The good thing is software engineers rarely make as little as $50k

If they’re paying $50k in Boston we would encourage you not to take that job!

The hard thing is that in many rural areas a $50k job is enough to buy a great house and live very comfortably forever, so we have to have pricing inclusive of rural areas. But in Boston our average salary is $90k!

Hold up. Your saying someone who graduated from your ~7 month program, without a traditional 4 year degree and no professional coding experience, should expect $90K as a base starting salary? In Boston? Did I understand you correctly?

You have a degree? How long have you been programming for s living? Not trying to be facetious here, it’s very likely you could get paid that in Boston now. Especially if you’re a strong negotiator.

I have the academic and industry creds to back me up, but we’re not talking about “me” here. We’re talking about the students whom you will be setting up with unrealistic expectations and a tithe of 17% of their annual salary (starting at $50).
