What if you just bought a 4TB external hard drive for $100? I'm confused about how this is worth the cost.

it's 4TB, SSD, via the fastest interface possible, needing no thought over what's internal/external, & nothing extra to carry/lose. for a dev using lots of virtual machines & big data sets, it's tempting. probably so for high-end video/photo/animation folks, too.
-
Still seems like a lot of money for a little bit faster access to files/convenience of not lugging an extra brick around. :) Cloud storage? I just can't help but wonder what it costs apple to put those TBs in there compared to what the consumer pays for them.
-
yes, Apple absolutely uses revealed willingness-to-pay, for high-TB SSDs (MacBook) & high-GB flash (iPad/iPhone), to price-discriminate & extract higher margins from pro users for those last increments of storage...
-
…but when over lifetime of unit, it avoids lots of delete-or-not decisions, or ensures you always have full datasets/test-configurations/alt-dev-environments/alt-OSes at hand at local speeds, it can plausibly pay itself back with time saved or a single analytic/debugging win
-
Gordon is right. For data analysts or video editors, they’ll fill it up. The computer is what they use all day, every day. The difference between built-in storage vs an external HD is the difference between a phone and an accessory — another thing to carry, to lose, to forget.

I need it for all those movies, music, and apps I store locally. What even is the cloud?!

Most of independent small film/video production companies I've worked with use these high end MacBooks for post production stuff like editing and sound mixing and can write them off as business expenses.

I bet it will also still have a crappy keyboard, too. Those 2014-era MBPs will be hot commodity like air-cooled 911s, mark my words.

Honestly, I do tons of photography and I like having access to my raw files without redownloading from the cloud so I’m part of that .001

Not - but 3K for a well configured 13' hurts. 1tb + 16gb ram is minimum if you wanna run Slack and Chrome

helps meet pro-needs but mainly: sets high point of comparison that helps to frame computer purchase and justify avg. HD upgrade ("i'm only upgrading to something reasonable like 512GB, not some crazy like 4TB")

Probably still compelling for the pro video crowd, they've been poorly served by apple for the last 3-5 years

Yet, most critics will focus on ridiculing how Apple even offers such an option.

Storage costs a lot, but this is really just a Windows XP Home / Pro situation. Make sure you’re capturing as much as possible from customers who need your product without cutting off people who can’t afford that pricepoint. The heavy pro users subsidize consumers in that way.
