Question: if you refuse to pay, they have no recourse. At what point does it get expunged from your credit? 7 years like other debt? Or never? If 7 years that’s a great education hack: go to $200k school, refuse to pay, wait 7 years and bam, fully redeemed credit at age 29

It’s still a debt you’re continuing to default on so credit will never recover

Wow this could destroy the ratings agencies. If every human has bad credit the system is basically ruined.

The part of your analysis you are missing is that once creditors stop getting their money as much, they will simply stop lending as much so students will have a harder time getting loans

Not if the backer of the loans is the federal government

The government has their own ways of restricting underwriting criteria, they could make income requirements more stringent for loans or they could institute grade requirements or reduce the amount of money per student available.

I know that the idea of casting a wide net in opening the doors of college to people who can't afford it is popular and i agree overall that it's a good idea, but I think that if students can discharge their loans away then the funding net will be smaller.

Which makes programs like lambda even more appealing to be honest.

Wait, so let me make sure I understand this. Because I know about credit card and mortgage debt but if you have student loan debt and you default, it never gets wiped off your credit?!

Yep you can't declare bankruptcy so it never goes off your credit

It wouldn't work that way if it was subject to the normal credit cycle rules
