I’d bet the average person would be better off with one year of college and three years of unpaid internships than four years of college and four years of student loans

Garbage take. Utterly ridiculous hypothetical. Just because overpriced tuition is a problem doesn't mean (THREE YEARS of) unpaid labor would be better. The worker would still need to take out loans just to pay rent. This is some silicon valley vulture nonsense.

... Then don't get a cushy apartment? Work a PT job as a waitress? Two ways to do this - either raise your generated income, or minimize your expenses.

asking workers to lower their standard of living and take a job that pays no money so they can maybe work for money later is exploitative. Not everyone can afford to weather that exploitation. Not everyone has a safety net.

What if 1. Companies have no reason to pay for the work because it’s a net loss to them (as most early internships are) 2. A stipend can be provided by a third party 3. This helps people avoid the crushing debt of student loans?

or: 1) Companies can pay their workers by theirselves because labor is being done for them 2) don't take on so many interns if you can't afford to pay them 3) don't rely on banks and government loans to pay stipends

What if the internships may be better *for students* than paying college tuition, but the companies don’t particularly want them so aren’t going to pay?

sounds like they need some better business practices, maybe their workers should unionize and demand a paid internship program

I knew that would be your response. It's all about the bottom line, isn't it rich boy? Just know you're gonna be seeing a lot worse than some collective bargaining in the future
