This is 100% correct. Housing has killed the golden goose that is Silicon Valley, yet network effects (VC, exec hires) don't fall apart that quickly. Solution? HQ in SF + pockets of leadership where possible, distributed everything elsehttps://twitter.com/andrewchen/status/1013877283633934342 …

Curious, if leadership & key functional roles are in SF are there fewer growth opportunities if you work remotely?
-
Great question. I don’t know.
-
No idea either! Maybe there's a hybrid model. I wonder whether many leaders can be effective remote (w.r.t. team AND other leaders). Given today's situation we'll likely see sooner rather than later

I don't get it. Pay someone in Ohio $100-150K and that's really respectable work. Why only hire in SF? It seems like bad business at this point.
-
The type of person who stays in Ohio isn’t the type of person you want.

One problem to solve for is the feeling of job security. If you lose a job in the Bay Area you can find another relatively easily. Not so much when you're remote.

Yet most, even super young "innovative" companies have a strict "no remote" policy. What problem can't all the communication/collaboration tools we've built (Slack, github, etc) solve? SV is strangely very dogmatic about this.
-
I've worked remotely now for years, and would not even consider working in an office now. The only real benefit I see is how in-person interactions absolutely create culture in a way that's DIFFERENT (not better, just diff), than remote does.
-
Even that though, is a problem that can be solved by more frequent in person gatherings. Even once a month, flying everyone in is less than paying west coast salaries.

Companies like
@zapier do this very successfully.
