The largest startup that does this which I'm aware of is @HashiCorp, which has 50 folks here (product, marketing, etc) out of total staff of 300.

You should talk to
@IsaacWyatt about how it works there!

Would be worth chatting to
@sytses especially since you’re both YC companies -
Is that 312 paid staff, or does "team" include something in between contributor and employee?https://about.gitlab.com/team/

When I worked there, staff was counted as someone working full-time on payroll. They do have some contractors, but those are generally cases where the person lives in a company where GitLab doesn’t have an official company set up.

I think when I left, there were about 230ish people working there.

@automattic (company behind@WordPress) is remote w/ almost 500ppl, 25% in SF I believe. They started w/ that being the goal. Have to be deliberate about it though, eg how u think about communication, management, etcThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

It doesn't scale well. I've been doing it for 13 years.

A related question is whether the structural advantages of having the exec team in the Bay Area will remain greater than the advantage of having one’s full team all together. I suspect the former is eroding faster than the latter, but not sure.

I see more and more companies opening offices in Seattle to attract senior talent. Most of the best folks here have families and kids in school. They won't move to SF.

Auttomatic has done this to 600 sort of. But their approach is not ideal since it grew from open source. I believe it can be done, but still lots to be explored. Hope you can share what you find as you grow so others can follow!

Upward mobility is tricky, if one aspires to be more than a gun for hire. It might be *really* hard if the talent aspires to his own business but he doesn't have any face-to-face possible with the money people.
