A good insurance in CA is closer to $2k/month, so sometimes it may make sense to take a job because of insurance
-

-
$2k/month is *insanely* good insurance with no deductible
-
Actually, it was a high deductible silver plan + a health equity account, through which company was paying the rest. But the plan itself was $900/half month, or at least that's what they offered me through COBRA after leaving
-
You guys have to have kids right? My insurance in Minnesota is $220 a month.
-
Nope, no kids. But married
-
Wow, happy I live in Minnesota!

$500 a month? LOL
-
...yes, those are literal numbers
-
Not comparable to a decent employer plan (at the level if you’re making enough to take a $40k pay cut and still survive)
-
That kind of employer sponsored plan would run you at least $1200-1500 on the open market w $500 ded & $2250 max out of pocket single covg.
-
That’s $3,333/month of insurance
-
I understand it’s still a better deal to take the extra 40k & buy the insurance yourself
Just pointing out the costs. Have a great day! -
I’ve lost 3 plans in 4 yrs. Had to re-shop. I’ve also helped my guy shop similar insurance for employees. Costs have become staggering.
-
It’s not just about the cost. You often can’t get into good health care networks with individual insurance. ACA plans not accepted.

Individual insurance through the ACA exchange isn't the same as group insurance through an employer. Take it from me-dealing with them is a nightmare. You have no leverage.

A good employer-based plan for a family w/ kids can easily run over $20K/yr. And if you're in a top tax bracket in a high-tax state, the top marginal tax rate can be 50%.

Dan Ariely wrote two whole books about it. Predictably Irrational — a must read if you haven’t already.
