Not in any early-web industries, no. Any adult, casino, early eCommerce, SEOs active at that time would disagree. Of course, if the most competitive queries you tried to rank for was "random brand" or anything non-competitive (most), you didn't see that.

hahaha... It was way easier than that! Usually you just needed to write 20 times your desired ranking keyword on the same color as your background and place them at the bottom of the page in order to don’t break your design and content.
