"Theranos hoodwinked Silicon Valley's most prominent investors" No, it didn't. Theranos showed how far you can get raising mostly dumb money. DFJ is their only investor you could *kind of* consider "Silicon Valley," and respectfully they're nowhere near most prominent.

You haven't done your research. DFJ wasn't the only SV VC $. The Theranos Series B came from Palo Alto, too.

Nowhere near a top tier SV fund. No name, very few investments, mostly later stage.

DFJ was an early investor, seed -iirc, and thus could have been funding the idea and not the fraud. Every other investor was not sharp SV money

Ya, 500k, but he still backs up Holmes which is crazy

I hope you were just countering the point that it wasn't top VC firms that invested and not that top SV VC firms aren't capable of doing a poor job of due diligence (because that would be incorrect).

I’m saying the crap Holmes pulled wouldn’t fly with smart money. Seed stage? Sure. Series A? Sure. $500m round? No chance in hell

DFJ was first money in. $500k to fund the exploration of what at the time was an energetic, passionate college student with some unique ideas that if they could be executed on would both serve a massive market and radically improve user / consumer / human experience.

Tim makes some very good points. Maybe when a culture that supposedly embraces risk and failure gets past their piling on party they can take the time to give them some consideration.

Isn't DFJ mostly defunct with two of the name partners no longer associated with the firm?
