Update: sources are telling me that apparently professors *don't* make 12x what they did in the 80s, so increased education costs might not explain it after all

I’m sure if we just gave schools more money through free tuition, they would use it responsibly, and not hire more administrators and give themselves all raises.

There may be other factors. “Our debt has more than doubled in the last 10 years as we've been on a building campaign," Gallogly said. "As a result of that, we have a beautiful campus and a lot to be proud of, but during that period of time, we spent approximately $730 million.”

My understanding from my professor friends is that most colleges have moved to hiring “adjunct professors” essentially, temping them. Read up on University of Akron’s short lived President Scott L. Scarborough for insight on one reason why colleges are getting so expensive

I’m mystified why no one is offering the 1988 college experience at 1988 prices. Is it illegal?
-
Googling some, my impression is that cuny tuitions have risen dramatically over the last few decades, although they started and remain low relative to other schools.
-
Well, they may not offer the 1988 experience relative to themselves, but certainly relative to other universities. When my father went, he went for free and lauded it as better than NYU. Its unlikely still like that

One reason college costs so much is because the popular programs have to subsidize the remaining half that lose money. There’s a lot of poetry and photography and trumpet professors out there.

Bowen's rule is a good summary of runaway higher ed prices...Robert Martin had some quip about it like "higher ed finance is an black hole"
