I feel like I'm professionally obligated to mention: 1) This will not actually stop all recurring payments because your bank may have business relationships where they tell a party in the value chain your new number to save you the trouble of re-entering it. 2) Contracts.

While some businesses make the decision to unilaterally terminate a business relationship for non-payment and then write off the uncollected invoices, this is not the only thing which contract law supports. You might, for example, be obligated to give notice.
-
Some businesses are *very aggressive* about collecting invoices which they issued prior to you giving notice, including e.g. sending them to a collections agency, dinging your credit, etc etc. (There exist gym brands notorious for this, among others.)

There used to be a SF startup called
@final that had an app for spinning up one time use and merchant locked CC numbers that you could turn on and off in app. Was hella convenient… But they died :( -
I believe
@PrivacyHQ offers the same. - End of conversation

I've used
@ask_trim before and liked it a lot. They show your subscriptions and automatically cancel (some) of them for you by just clicking a buttonThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Austen check out http://privacy.com - then can create cards specifically for online payments so you don't have to worry about the ones you don't need :)
-
+1 for Privacy. And they just added a beta for cash back I believe.

Does that ding your credit? I reported a credit card lost/stolen and one of my monitoring services pinged me.
-
Nope! Only if they pull your credit report again for some inexplicable reason (or if you forgot to pay).

This definitely does not work all the time and more and more companies are figuring out how to keep billing

Sometimes recurring charges can go through (if the bank knows you have a recurring relationship with the store). The absolute best way to weed out recurring payments is still to just go through your statement and manually cancel what you don't need.
