A code bootcamp founder called me a couple days ago asking how Lambda School has such a diverse student body. “You have folks from all walks of life, we end up always training rich kids.” Step one: don’t charge $18,000 in upfront non-refundable tuition

I think Udacity do a good job. They do video quizz video and then mini assignments that get checked by a bot. Itersperced with motivational stuff. It's a relatively new thing but they have something that can be built upon. Imop it's far better than traditional learning.

They do a good job, but there's so, so much more that can happen. It's certainly not the pinnacle of education.

I'm sure it's not. But it's a way that can allow a lot of flexability in all aspects. Releasing or leveraging super valuable resources.

In my entire degree I probably spent about three hours one on one with lecturers. More with tutors and technical assistants. But the lecturers lectured. It was never one on one.

That's how it was for everyone at Auckland Uni in the 80s. I think masters students had far more interaction. But I'm an introvert anyway so happy to study on my own.

One last point that I'd add is that in-person instruction can, at times, get in the way of a learner. It isn't uncommon for instructors to over-lecture, over-demonstrate, etc. and get in the way of their learners actually diving in and getting their hands dirty developing skills.

Yes. Less the medium and more the underlying pedagogy. If I want to become an NFL kicker, should I read about kicking? Watch kickers? Or should I get out and kick some balls? Obviously all three (to varying degrees). If I have a coach guide me through that process, even better.
