Bingo. If there's a zero-sum competition of "who can afford to go to school for the longest" the rich and affluent will always win, retaining the upper classes for themselveshttps://twitter.com/clairlemon/status/1001970083009359872 …

Dilution of academic standards & credential inflation also hits those students who don't come from wealth & pedigree the hardest. Today one needs a Masters to signal what a Bachelor's degree once did -- and this only benefits those who have money & time to waste.

It’s mind boggling how this simple argument is not widely understood & is often misconstrued as an anti education or discriminatory stance.

teachers are the worst, taxpayer pay for them to go to paper mill grad schools to get a masters or phd, to get automatic raises while schools are failing .... yes they are, I live in Atlanta.

Yes; it's also _where_ and which school. One related frustration is that Continuing Education and Extension schools of universities are seen as "community service" - not real academics, and so don't get actual extension/research opps! - but at the same time are money-makers.

And even the intellectual fortitude required for most masters level classes is laughable. A degree has become a signal for one's ability to piss away money or ability to rack up absurd amounts of debt rather than signalling the ability to grasp abstract, intellectual concepts

not true: win funding once you prove yourself, or work in the industry and study part time, or take out a loan etc etc. but completely agree with 'dilution' and 'inflation'
