Presuming your shared apartment with roommates isn’t $2,000 plus a month, you don’t have $100k+ in student loans ...etc, etc

-
That’s the thing, housing in rural areas doesn’t cost $2k/month

3 bedroom and 1.5 acres for under a grand. If you know where to look.

Is the point that the poorest people in our society should be happy with what they have and don’t need more?
-
I know. But this kind of fact is like pointing out facts about genetic human population differences. They’re so often seen only in certain contexts that they are de facto suspicious without a provided context.

Sure, if you have no dependents and have perfect health.
-
$11/hr with dependents is quite doable, and qualifies for Medicaid :)
-
Doesn't qualify for Medicaid in states that haven't implemented ACA expansion (most of rural America). In Missouri, a parent in a family of 3 is ineligible for Medicaid unless they make < $381 per month.

Conversely people in rural America don't seem to grasp that $15/hour is not a living wage for a majority of Americans.
-
Right? Folks in San Fransisco understand, it's rural America that doesn't get it. Many of the people in major cities _came_ from those small towns.

I don't think this is right. A living wage ought to be seen as more than subsistence---should be enough to, e.g., save at least a little bit, invest in human capital, resilience against disasters, start a family, and maybe even have geographic mobility.

My mother made $13 hour in Providence, RI a NOT rural area...She raised 2 kids on less than that. Retired last year.
-
Ohh...on a side of Providence you definitely don’t want to ever end up in..olneyville, west end. I’ll tell you my story some time...I’ve a long way from that.

The same thought process is prevalent in all the tech hubs around the world. Maybe more wonderful products will be built from the tech hubs if they grasp the rural wages.
