Surely there’s a dozen startups that have tried and failed at this point. Technically, it’s incredibly easy. Has to be a customer acquisition challenge.

I’ve long wondered why. Also, why no competitors? Shelfari went into cryostasis a decade ago. Is there just no business model here? Have the dominant social networks made building a competing vertically-focused network impossible? Software for personal libraries mostly sucks

It's not really a great product company. The Kindle is a pretty average product experience too. Tres frustrating. I love the Goodreads concept.

When I was there, I always wondered why Amazon didn’t make a dedicated book club site. My book club people still cut and paste reviews, then voting over email and it’s a terrible UX.
