It's helpful for meetings to have a sort of social dead man switch in the sense that the meeting is over by default instead of continues by default. (At Viaweb I was famous for asking "are we done?")

Good opportunity for a video call tool which only ever allows calls of 15 mins. With no exceptions. "Sorry, we use $TOOLNAME, have to end soon."
-
That might actually work. It would have to be really good, because then you could claim you were using it because it was good rather than because you didn't want to give anyone more than 15 minutes. But if a good product also had this rule, it could be even more popular.

Free accounts of Zoom have a 40 minute limit, which has been a helpful forcing function to wrap up an hour long scheduled meeting faster sometimes.

It became my default after our
@ycombinator interview - works wonders! -
What a pleasant thought to think that YC interviews themselves might change customs about meetings.

My tips for effective meetings 1) If you can avoid it, avoid it. 2) Set clear objectives 3) Invite the smallest # of ppl needed to make a decision 4) Share relevant docs beforehand 5) Do time checks & prevent ppl from going down rabbit holes 6) Send out notes & main outcomes

Fb meetings are probably 20 min... most start 5 min late (kind of a social rule) and I end mine 5-10 early to try to help ppl out. They should be 15-20 or 40.

Counter thought: what if default meeting length was 1-2h and people would actually prepare, discuss and think through everything as opposed to do 15min syncs with everyone only to achieve nothing?
-
This might even encourage not to have meetings that aren’t worth that time. Most things that can be discussed in 15min can be done via email.

And standing up. To make sure it keeps to the point.

Agree. And max 5 bullet points to discuss, no more.
