Hey @AustenAllred, I think you mean underrepresented candidates? "Diversity" is not a synonym for minority :)
Happy to connect on why the language actively reinforces structural exclusion and oppression!

I wasn’t using it as a synonym for “minority.” DMs are open, happy to hear if there’s something I should be saying differently

If a company can’t cover interview expenses, let alone relocation expenses, that’s probably not a company mature enough to consider relocating for.
-
They cover them, but they only reimburse, so the students have to float the cost then expense it
-
Ya. Float is real problem even once hired. Companies aren’t good at addressing it and it makes the person feel judgement/shame.
-
Not addressing it is (sadly) laziness on the companies part - one way of differentiating an 80% organization from the 20% Companies that have it together will address it right away, nbd. At least, you would hope.
-
You would think digital solutions like
@SAPConcur (based in Bellevue here!) would make this easy for companies. Maybe they can provide some insight? -
Good point, Michael. Expense automation does simplify and speed up the reimbursement process. A win for everyone involved! Learn more about how this can be done: http://spr.ly/6016DFcvo

I was wondering if you could comment more on why more companies aren’t doing it.

Such a good point. Would also add that companies should be explicit about what they’ll cover upfront so people know / don’t have to ask.

100% - need to avoid that awkward unknown

It was so, so frustrating with being broke, no credit card, and trying to get a job ¡in the 90's! wrt how much comfort companies would assume you had in meeting the lifestyle expectations of managers and recruitment agencies - no, I can't just hop on a plane and book a hotel etc
-
Then there were the job interview and hiring processes that would drag out weeks and sometimes even months (sad but true: my first Big Job offer came 5 months after the interview), or those that expected you to start tomorrow. Jeez Louise, ppl aren't held in suspension vats!

To wit: for most, relocation itself to an incredibly expensive mega-metro just isn’t an option. Especially for working at a company whose tech collapses distance:http://blairreeves.me/2018/08/30/why-youre-having-trouble-hiring/ …

Agree w/ this so much. I just relocated from Toronto to Shanghai to work for a startup. Between my last day at my old job and my first pay here is 2 months. I’ve had to pay for visa fees, rent, agent fees, furnishing, food, etc. Not sure if most young people could finance this
