The recent book on them by David McCullough was one of my favorite books in quite some time.

If you have not read the Wright Brothers by McCullough, you must.

The story of their sister made me cry. Such an important reminder that family matters.

Planes were used by 1914 in WW1, right? Think about that: 1911 to 1914. Glider to game changer. Imagine that kind of movement now. Have we shifted anything that fast 2015-2018? Can we shift anything that fast today to 2021? Relativity is nuts, man.

Planes were pretty worthless in WW1. A book called Battle for the Bundu is a good accounting of that. The crazy relative timeline thing with the Wright brothers is that the first flight was in 1903 and for about 10-15 years afterward nobody believed them or would meet with them.

A similar engineering feat nobody believed for a long time when it happened was John Harrison's the sea-faring clock that first helped ships navigate accurately (Royal Geographic Society days). There's a great book about that called Longitude by Dava Sobel.

Another 58 years later, man figured out how to build addictive mobile apps.

Space is cool & all, but how can it match the excitement of getting to a new level in candy crush!

Seriously though, depressing part is that a very large portion of people today genuinely find their facebook feed more exciting than space and science in general. Blows my mind.
-
you think the ratio of people interested in science has decreased?
-
Hopefully not. But just seems that way as these days every stupid/ignorant person can be as loud as they want and are broadcast it to the entire world. In the past I'm sure there were just as many of them, but they would have to do a lot more work to be heard.

What will happen in 2026, 58 years after the moon landing?

Maybe first commercial all-electric flight?

Mars. Mars is what happens.
