That number is actually a little misleading. SF Homeless Czar @JeffKositsky mentioned that about two thirds of the budget actually goes towards homelessness prevention with rent subsidies and permanent housing.https://www.economist.com/united-states/2018/05/31/can-a-new-mayor-fix-san-franciscos-housing-and-homelessness-problems …

66% of our budget went to housing last FY (not prevention, that’s another category). Housing will drop to 58% of our budget this FY due to opening of more shelter...thanks for the opportunity to clarify.

Not to sound like an asshole, but it would be cheaper to send them on a bus ticket to literally anywhere and they'd have a house down payment.

Most of it probably goes to 6 figure salaries for bureaucrats.

With a reasonable housing cost, which the city and the property owners refuse to accept, the money would be adequate for survival. My family lived off of half of that with the basic needs met in Tennessee.

Not taking anything away from the problem, but this seems like the wrong ratio to look at if much of that spending goes toward making people not counted in the denominator. I.e., anything that takes homeless off the streets would make the stat "worse".

You do nothing expending in shelter if you dont attack the real problem (drugs, alcoholism, mental diseases) Most people I saw on the streets were ill people, to be homeless is just the symptom.

And that’s just what SF spends. California and various parts of the federal government also spend on homeless. Probably hits $50k per homeless individual.
