I'm curious . Christmas of course is not Jewish holiday. Most prisoners in Auschwitz I assume would be Jewish. So why would they observe Christmas. There were of course Catholic Poles there but I think that would be the only large group to observe Christmas.

In December 1940 vast majority of prisoners were Polish Christians. You need to remember that Auschwitz was created by Nazi Germans to destroy Polish leadership and resistance. While there were Polish Jews in the camp there too, mass transports of Jews began in March 1942.
-
Thank you for sharing that. Never studied Auschwitz, wasn't aware of the Polish impact.

See our online lesson about the history of Auschwitz: http://lekcja.auschwitz.org/en_1/

Thank you for making this clear to everyone insterested. Few people know that 9 out of 10 Polish citizens killed before 1942 were non-Jewish. These proportions reversed only after the Wannsee conference. I often quote this tweet of yours in this regard:https://twitter.com/AuschwitzMuseum/status/959476221095620608 …

I am gonna go out on a limb and suggest that the vast majority of the prisoners DIDN’T “celebrate Christmas Eve” as it was a meaningless day in their lives......
-
Auschwitz was created by Nazi Germans in 1940 to destroy Polish leadership and resistance. Until fall 1941 most of the prisoners were Poles, mainly Christians. Mass transports of Jews began in March 1942. Among 400,000 registered prisoners Jews were around 50 percent.
-
Wow. Never knew that.
-
And this is tragedy for us, Poles

Możecie powiedzieć dlaczego nie zaprosiliscie rodziny Witolda Pileckiego oraz uprawiacie antypolską propagandę? W obozie ginęli głównie Polacy! Czemu o tym nie piszecie?
-
I gather this is some rightwing campaign in Poland and you have never visited Auschwitz. I was there this summer and both the guide and the written information are very clear about Polish doctors, police, soldiers , politicians and others that were murdered.
-
The question still stands. Why Pilecki’s children have not been invited to commemoration of the anniversary of camp’s liberation ? Officially because of “limited places”. And one of the guests was Rainer Höss, the grandson of Rudolf Höss -German Nazi commandant of the camp.
-
Rainer Höss was never a guest and never received an invitation.. In the picture - Zofia Pilecka at the 71st anniversary of liberation of Auschwitz.pic.twitter.com/yHGrZ91amU

And what about 70th anniversary ?

Christ, that's absolutely horrendous. We don't know how good we have it.
-
It's shocking, isn't it? A hard thing to remember at this time of year
-
Oh for sure.... Mans inhumanity to man...So much hatred, something I'll never understand.
-
I don't understand the hatred, but I understand how politicians feed it, and that's a disgusting thing.
-
Politicians will unfortunately stoop to the very lowest acts if it's in their interests, i.e. re-election, courting a paticular clique etc.
-
In any case Frohe Weinachten to you and K.
Hope your day is going well. -
Yah, everything is good here. A very happy Xmas & New Year to you and yours!
-
Thank you very much.
