in 1987 there was a resource guide for low-income people in the Western suburbs of Melbourne put out by the Western Association of Community Centres. it included reassurance that if you were unemployed it wasn’t your fault and gave contact details for the Unemployed Workers Union

The "Drug Testing proposal" is just the another step in the Coalition's wet dream of having every social security benefit tied to the Cashless Debit Card. "Compassionate Welfare" is just a moral & ideological disguise to open up another market for capital & the Indue company

Drug Testing welfare recipients doesn't work. It didn't work in NZ or the USA, it isn't going to work here But it will do 2 things (1)Sure up fat profit for Indue w/ the Income Managment Scheme, (2)Further suspicion & distrust of the poor, by moral policing the "dole bludger"

No amount of 'financial literacy' is going to change the fact that my rent and bills exceed my income.

There is already an in-house service that allows people to pre-distribute their payments to utility and other providers, called Centrepay. It is voluntary and accounts for any 'financial literacy' arguments in favour of the Indue card.

Centrelink recipients in cities don't need a paternalistic financial services rort to hold 80% of their income for them: that's just called 'paying rent'.

Clearly there is an issue of 'financial literacy' at play for the Senator. With access to proper support and counselling, maybe she could eventually be 'trained' to spend less than $650,000 of public money, per year, on herself!

Mark Leahy was the general manager of the South Australian Welfare Rights Centre. Two years ago, funding cuts to the sector took his job. A year ago, the organisation ceased to exist. Now the 58-year-old is homeless -- my latest for :

will take a keen interest in this matter the next time you're up at Estimates, we're sure. You'd best have a good answer for her.

why would you lie to the Senate about your plans to redress victims of your illegal scheme?

The government needs to immediately lift ALL income support payments — nobody should have to live on $40 a day

The g’ment is already crowing about the projected $2.1b in savings from this new reporting system — which is ludicrous when we don’t yet know how much it still actually owes robodebt victims

Job seekers, if yr presented with something like this do NOT sign it. Report it to the privacy commissioner & the department of employment. Contact for advice & support. Don’t be bullied by these ghouls into signing your privacy & rights away

hmm, beginning to suspect that our political elite — who routinely spend more on themselves in a single day than Newstart recipients get in a year — might be fundamentally incapable of anything approaching “ethical conduct”

the sooner we give up on the expectation that these ppl will ever care about us, the sooner we can put all our anger/energy to better use: like joining orgs that support marginalised communities & build their power

welp, im being forced into Work For the Dole — even though I was in paid work up until November & do ~40 hrs of volunteering/week. Last time, WFD very nearly drove me to suicide: it’s 25 hrs/week of free, coerced labour w/ a lauded 2% success rate of getting ppl into a “real” job
