Cant' they finish making the Hangout Chat app first?? It is a completely under-featured service that they basically got tired of designing halfway through the app development. Some of the features that were promoted haven't even been integrated yet.
They should have just stopped at g-chat. It worked! Every chat app after that had fewer, less effective features.

The Hangouts Chat was developed to be a Slack competition for folks who already paid for Google Business tools. We tried using it at my office and found it severely lacking. It has a great concept, but without development we won't use it. Recycling names is bad branding, also.

Agreed about it being a mess. I could never understand how a chat app could ever be successful when it doesn't show who's online/offline. I never understood how Google will replace an app/service with one with fewer features.
