Agree it’s a good idea journalistically, but it’s important to recognize its limitations especially if these are families who see nothing clearly looming on the horizon. They need insurance, almost by definition, for risks that may not emerge in such a small sample.

Journalists can deeply report their own sorts of "longitudinal studies," and they can supplement their stories with outside data. But if they follow a score of families, they're not especially likely to see risks that befall small fractions - the kinds that can be devastating.
