Palliative care is absolutely NOT synonymous w end of life care. It is the field devoted to providing people with serious life-limiting Illness with expert care that serves their goals for quality of life, not just quantity of life. These are not either/or.https://twitter.com/amitabhchandra2/status/957245195304800256 …

It does seem strange to view palliative care as being synonymous w/ EOL care+Hospice. Can’t it coexist w/ Tx? Or is this being naive?

Yes! This misconception of #PalliativeCare being only EOL care only is a MAJOR barrier that limits access to invaluable symptom management for people suffering at ANY stage of illness (esp those going through tough active treatment). #hpm #PallOnc

http://bit.ly/2DG6KLZ  Our team@ MD Anderson studied the perception among docs of "#PalliativeCare" (PC) vs"#SupportiveCare"(SC). Our Oncs felt PC is a barrier to referral more than SC, is synonymous w #hospice, decreases hope, & is less appropriate to address chemo side effectspic.twitter.com/lv1Fa13W5w

OUR MOST PROMISING FINDING: A significantly greater % of oncologists expressed that they would refer a pt w a new cancer diagnosis to "#SUPPORTIVECARE" than "#PalliativeCare" (SC, 81% vs. PC, 43%; p < .001). Its all in the name! DIFFERENT NAME = BETTER ACCESS #hpm #pallonc #meded

How might we rebrand it and change the conversation? My Dad refused a palliative care consult so we just didn't tell him one of his favorite docs had a dual specialty. At the end, he asked for palliative care and we essentially said, "You're soaking in it."

I think it’s less about rebranding and more about acceptance of #palliative care referral among specialties. This is part of what my @PCORI project is all about. ☺️ #hpm #PallOnc #btsmqol

This NEJM RCT investigates palliative care for serious lung cancer (so EOL), but it shows early palliative care improves quality of life and ended up extending length of life as well (while reducing health care costs) http://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMoa1000678 …

I love that RCT— but I did want a non-EOL setting, in part bc that RCT (unwittingly) strengthens the view that its ICU -or- palliative care
