She was mentally ill and dumped on the street in nothing but a gown on a frigid night. This is immoral, inhumane, and still common. The only difference: this time someone was horrified and caught it on camera.http://wapo.st/2Dt3bK0

Imamu Baraka didn't stand silently by. He pushed back. @PhilipKennicott asks: Will you pass that fundamental moral test? Our Senators and Fox News faced that test w Trump's blatant racism in his s***hole moment on immigration. And they mostly failed.http://wapo.st/2Dt4Jni

While two Senators "didn't remember," @LindseyGrahamSC spoke up: "'America is an idea, not a race.' ... And by the way, the senator added, he himself was a descendant of immigrants who came to the United States from "shithole countries with no skills."https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/12/us/politics/trump-immigration-congress.html?_r=0 …

And this is happening in addition to children in Baltimore schools with no heat & an LA educator being removed from a School Board meeting for questioning why the board prez got a raise ($400k) & no one else had in a decade. Something is desperately wrong here in our country.

Where does the blame lie? This is not a hospital problem; it’s a social and public health one. @DrLeanaWen

How is it also not a hospital problem? "First, do no harm." Discharging a scantily-clothed, mentally-unwell person into the cold weather without ensuring she had someone to get her to a safe place is DOING HARM. (Note, I use "also" to acknowledge PH and society play a role.)

If we want to define hospitals and EDs as the place to solve all societal problems, I’m fine with that. But then give hospitals access to shelter beds, food, etc.

How should this be handled when the patient is violent/aggressive or refuses offers for shelter or care?

A new height in utter shameful lack of empathy. Not surprising. I was devastated by suburb of homeless poverty in #SanDiego. Residential streets full of flimsy tents. "Tolerated" situations. Slow erosion of empathy due to growing mountains of poverty? How long till this is norm?

My mentally ill nephew was just let out of jail in Phoenix and put back on the streets. Staying at a friend's house for a few days but what about after that? The mentally ill have nowhere to go .

In medicine we care about people. This is not caring. This is (as you put it, @Atul_Gawande) immoral.

Of course the apology came only after video surfaced! If video not existed, the hospital would continue to be comfortable with their actions. Kinda like the GOP and developing tRump drama.

Unfortunately this is common practice. Many homeless patients w/ adv. chronic disx. are regularly discharged to shelters, when available, or into the streets. Hospitals with high readmissions should be required to provide respite/transitional medical housing for homeless pts.

THAT'S what you have a problem with? The hospital literally wheeled a mentally ill women out of the hospital & dumped her in 30 degree weather. A good Samaritan filmed it & called an ambulance for her. W/O him, this story wouldn't have hit national news. He deserves a reward.

Son couldn’t understand why we (adults) were upset over this story. I said “it’s like if your bus driver stopped halfway and said walk the rest of the way home.” It’s wrong! Where is the care in #Healthcare?
