Kentucky is literally reintroducing literacy tests for people to get coverage if they fail their work requirement. Literacy tests. (And hey, never mind that lack of literacy may have been a reflection of undiagnosed medical issues and a reason they don’t have a job.)https://twitter.com/aslavitt/status/951904618103140353 …

Let’s start here in reviewing the new program. There’s a “literacy” provision. If you don’t work enough hours and lose coverage, you can get to see a doctor again if you can pass a state literacy course about health or money. 😕2/ pic.twitter.com/RooWcagCOL

I meant introducing. I couldn’t help be remember, however, when literacy tests were last used — to keep black people from being able to register to vote. Now it is just as bad — to keep people from getting treatment for sickness.

This isn't a test but a class supposedly meant to teach you about finances and health as if you're too stupid to know & that's why you're poor. States already use them for other benefits. Texas uses them for food stamps and unemployment.https://twitter.com/GilmerHealthLaw/status/952609639278960642 …

In Texas they make you take these classes already for some benefits. I know because I had to go to them. They're absurd. https://twitter.com/ASlavitt/status/951904618103140353 …

To be clear, NONE of this is new. This has been a policy goal for a long time. When I worked in the TX lege - republicans wanted these exact same provisions in any talk of Medicaid or CHIP expansion. These have existed for some time in different contexts, just no one cared before

It's not a literacy test, per se, but a requirement to take and pass a "medical literacy" or "financial literacy" COURSE. So it's actually worse than a simple literacy test. Even if a person is literate, the course itself might be challenging, or more likely, poorly designed.

It's designed to trap people in a downward spiral. Imagine the scenario. You lose your job b/c you are too sick to work. Thus, you lose healthcare. You can't devote time & energy to the course b/c of ill health. You need to get healthy. But you just lost your healthcare. Awful.

This from 1978, but offers some interesting stats and concludes with the idea that under title XX states should offer a literacy course to those who fail the tests. https://www.jstor.org/stable/30015577?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents …pic.twitter.com/eNZttQ4YPY

Yes this is just designed to keep people from getting healthcare. They probably also have to pay for the literacy test and travel to a specific place to take it. These are roadblocks purposely constructed.

The lack of GOP systems thinking confounds me. I am an RN who worked for years in the ER. We decided healthcare is a right with #EMTALA. Not providing care until the situation is emergent is expensive & a mistake we will pay for literally and figuratively. #costshifting

Unspeakable- when do we call this out as a crime against humanity? Is this an attempt to cause some people to die? Can this be challenged?
