As a physician who deals with life and death decisions on a daily basis, there is a process in our hospital bylaws that deals with physician who appear compromised. Why not the office of the President?

It doesn't take a "stable genius" or a professional to make your own diagnosis!pic.twitter.com/UBX2FfRy2H

That's why we have to test the candidates, not the president. It would be way less disruptive to find another candidate that it would be to transfer the presidency. Test the winner of each convention, including independents. Test presidents if they run for a second term.

Goldwater Principal.

Governs diagnosing, not commentary on general mental status or news. And only applies to APA members. Principles are sound, but the rule arose from politics not from any significant patient safety concerns.
-
President having symtoms of potential cognotive decline is MAJOR concern and warrants attention and public scruinty because removing a president, even for clear medical concern, is ultimately a political process.

There’s enough public evidence to be concerned and voice those concerns loudly and often. His health is at risk, and may deteriorate firther under intensive stress. Needs independent and transparent evaluation.
-
Talking about a person’s mental health (which has not been professionally evaluated) in a public forum by those that may or may not be qualified to do so is slippery at best and should be done, if at all, w/ great caution others using this for enjoyment & mocking is troubling
-
In 99% of circumstaces i agree. But the President is an exception, given the powers he/she has and the visibility of representing a country. And it is a real concern that should be talked about until an evaluation by a qualified professional can take place.
-
I am cautioning about a professional, respectable discussion. I’ve seen diagnosing by professionals and others in the public square. I’ve also seen mockery of mental illness which degrades those suffering from mental illness. Again... I advise caution and respect.

Medics accept revalidation, audit and evidence-based decisions. Why not in politics?

Before my husband became an air traffic controller he had to pass extensive physical and psychological tests. We should expect the same from presidential candidates, along with annual checkups.

Interesting that it’s optional. As a pilot, we have an age limit for comm. flying, but no cognitive testing. Biannual medical check, but no cognitive component. Should the Prez? Probably, with trigger mechanism, but it could be open to partisan abuse.

We test for capacity in in medicine regarding far less important decisions than those the President makes...

Replacing politics with unelected experts is not the answer. Our political system ALREADY has the means to remove or impeach a prez, and if the system were not grotesquely corrupt, it would be doing so. Put your energy toward electoral reform rather than calling on experts.
