Fascinating @NewYorker review of a fascinating book. We don't really know how anesthesia works -- because we don't really know how consciousness works.http://bit.ly/2E3goIt

A reminder to maintain a positive conversation during procedures, whether with propofol or conscious sedation.

I was aware during surgery once. I didn't complain, but spoke quietly to the surgeon afterwards. He was condescending and immediately dismissed it as a dream. Then I told him what type, and size, of suture material he'd asked for.

Hinduism has dealt with these issues for a long time in sophisticated and interesting ways. Many of Hindu literature deals with consciousness and perception.

I woke up during oral surgery when I was eight. The anaesthetic was still working, so no pain, but I could see and hear. Fortunately it was right at the end so not too disturbing. Nobody believed me.

And definitely always handle yourself, choosing your actions and words with wisdom and honor when dealing with others...even when they are under anesthesia...for we know all too well, they often can still hear you!!! PRIMUM NON NOCERE

Hmmm, a headset playing classical music or intermittent recordings of how healthy, resilient and pain free one is could actually help them recover more readily and with less pain. I am fascinated by consciousness, mind and body science! This is the future of medicine & health.

When you put it like that, it sounds much more terrifying and as tho anesthesiologists are just winging it...which is why I supposed they still call it "practicing medicine?"

Tx —I’ll get the book. Reminded me of comatose brain injured patients who later relayed conversation bits that we didn’t think they’d gotten. Thankfully we e knew to converse as if they got it all.

Fascinating article, but I was completely distracted by the glaring error that women are supposed to be unconscious during c-sections!

The review is quite enough, thank you. It's best I don't have anything more to worry about. I also have serious reservations about the effects of general anesthesia on the geriatric brain. Too much anecdotal evidence it's not a good idea if it can be avoided.

Incredible article on what must be an intriguing book. My boyfriend is TERRIFIED of anasthesia & refuses to have dental work as a result. Wish I could find some science to reassure him, but alas this book just raises more questions

Thanks Ashley - one of the things I discovered in researching the book is that information really is power. Knowing what is going to happen, communicating your fears to your anesthetist, even preparing yourself with a hypnosis tape - can all make a big difference.
