The unbearably sad childbirth-related death of CDC official Shalon Irving. Her postpartum BP of 158/112 was a 911 emergency. No one told her. Getting this wrong is a major reason our maternal mortality is worst in developed world. And it is fixable.https://www.propublica.org/article/nothing-protects-black-women-from-dying-in-pregnancy-and-childbirth …

Come on nurses, we have to recognize the high BP, report it and insist on intervention!

So. Sad. “Limited diversity in the medical profession contributes to the black mothers’ sense of alienation. Blacks make up 6%of doctors (though 11%of OB-GYNs), 3% of medical school faculty and less than 2% of National Institutes of Health-funded principal investigators”

1/I experienced this after the birth of my daughter. Sent home after C section with very swollen legs and feet. Then a massive headache started that I attributed to exhaustion. Went to post op Dr appt to remove sutures. BP was 205/135. Rushed to ER

I’m concerned that the focus is on the color & not the medicine. African American women do not respond as well to the same medication a white woman does. Idk the science behind it but 15 years practice prove it true to me.

My sister's OBGYN thought childbirth cured pre-eclampsia. By the grace of God she didn't have a stroke. So much ignorance.

Is it failing to keep knowledge current? Relying too much on test results and not enough on the woman in front of them saying "something is wrong"?

The worst medical care I ever received was postpartum at a baby friendly hospital. Racism played a role here but the US has a really screwed up system for providing women with maternity care.
