My mother is on Medicare. Her insulin just went up to more than $3,100 for a one month supply for one and the other type of insulin is $1,500 for a one month supply. When she hits the Medigap she had to pay the full amount plus the cost of her other meds. This is bad all around.

And, keep in mind that since 2006 it is illegal to sell gap coverage that includes prescription drug coverage. So seniors are at the mercy of the drug companies who charge these exorbitant prices for several months during the year. It will be worse with the

I’m a PhD student with chronic auto-immune diseases. With this tax bill, I lose my mortgage interest, medical expenses (which are huge), and now all my schooling expenses as deductions. I don’t know if I’ll be able to continue w/school. In the land of opportunity, I weep.

Med students don’t typically have an income to deduct interest against, nor are in repayment.
-
Also, attending physicians typically earn enough that they can’t deduct the interest anyway

...and most residents are in deferment. (Although paying on your loans as a resident and taking the deduction, as well as an IRA, is a great way of reducing your AGI while you still can. Just say’n.)

The Orphan Drug tax credit is vital to encourage companies to develop treatments for rare diseases. Millions of patients have no treatment that helps. Morbidity and mortality are high. This disincentive for Orphan Drug development is a big tragedy.
