Dr. Gawande, I’ve heard you say that HTN is the biggest killer in our country and only 40% have it recognized. With these guidelines, that number will shoot up. Does that really do anything to solve the issue of medical literacy/ general neglect of incremental care?

Very nice article. Important correction for the author of the article. It is not correct that <140 was considered “normal” prior to last week. It was considered “prehypertension” —- an abnormal state.
-
Atul said that <120/80 was normal in his tweet. It’s still considered normal.
-
I was referring to the Harvard article by Tello where she wrote, “ The guidelines, in a nutshell, state that normal blood pressure is under 120/80, whereas up until Monday, normal was under 140/90”. But I see now that Dr Gawande made the correction already. O/w GREAT article!
-
Ahh. Great point. You’re right, that looks like a mistake in the article.
@HarvardChanSPH@HarvardHealth please take a look! Normal was not previously defined as <140/90.

What are the recommendations for stage 1 hypertension without other risk factors with all the life-style recommendations already addressed? Do you use home / office recordings, or only 24-hours?
-
Tables like these suggest the guidelines should be more complex: https://www.nhg.org/sites/default/files/bsl/images/m84_01_0.jpg …

What it does is create medical dependency in people who are asymptomatic and should be encouraged irrespective of BP to be making those lifestyle changes. I'm with Gilbert Welsh

It seems to me to be a part of a wider conspiracy to pathologize everything.
