An interesting approach to mosquito control involving releasing male insects with bacteria that make females sterile.https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/11/14/how-releasing-more-mosquitoes-might-actually-curb-population-irritating-insects/AXrRGU5PsTBp15gYq4BngK/story.html …

1 Aedes aegypti vector is more worrisome the southern you go 🤔2 This experiment sounds like sounds like central Florida love bug urban legend 👀 3 Human safety experiments will still be needed. I worry this would be tested in 🇵🇷 without public consent & inadequate testing.

'Tis interesting but adding any GMO into the natural world creeps me out. They want to introduce GMO mice (millions) on Nantucket?!

Some feel that altering the mosquito population may have an impact beyond the expected borders. E.g. CRISPR https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/16/science/gene-drives-crispr.html?_r=1 …pic.twitter.com/mNdgPBjFKU

Since 2015 Brazil has been releasing GM Aedes aegypti male mosquitoes that carry a genetic mutation that makes their descendants die in larval stage & has had a success 99% success rate in reducing the wild Aedes aegypti mosquito population.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4489809/ …

This is a bad idea. Every time people release some bio-containment plan with good intentions, there are unknown and unanticipated consequences. In time something will happen, like populations of birds that eat a mozzies will diminish, and then we'll see the dominos start to fall

Would it be possible to target the diseases-carrying capability of the female mosquitoes, instead of making them sterile, and possibly eliminating them completely? 🤔The mosquitoes must be a part of the food chain for either an insect or a reptile..

They already are. How about not forcing change, when nature is in its natural cycle we have proper evaluation. Human forced altering on the eco system has caused layers of irreversible damage. Fixing what they broke over and over.
