Reframe as 9/10 saved survived for at last another year. :)

Do any clinicians genuinely believe that reversing the overdose is all that is required? "Great they've woken up...job done!!!"
-
Sometimes that's all you're able to do though. Patients may not be ready to accept further help at the time. Still gives them a chance.

Surprised it's only 1 in 10. Naloxone is rescue, not treatment or cure. Many stories of rescued patients OD'ing again later the *same day*.

ummm...doesn't that mean that 9 of 10 who were on death's door are still alive?
-
I'm not sure if I should use this one in my biostats course, or my pharmacology course. I teach both.

Honestly, I don't know if I find it that grim. For 9/10 people who were on the verge of death to still be alive a year later...that's hope.

So 90% do not die within a year? I don't think anyone believes naloxone fixes the problem, it just gives recipients another chance.

Thanks, Atul, for tweeting about my study. 10% mortality = extremely high. Median age was 54. Baseline death rate for that age is 0.4%.

Or: 90% of those who overdose and are revived by naloxone are still alive a year later. http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/10/30/percent-rescued-narcar-mass-died-within-year-new-study-says/ …

How many people who are not revived by Narcan die within the next year?

Guess that also means 9 survived that year?

Compared to CPR survival rates, naloxone looks pretty effective. But we should be doing much better for treatment after overdose.

Naloxone is not a cure for addiction. It saves their lives but they go right back and shoot up again.Missing a MAJOR step here America.

Sad. In Ontario, most don’t want to give personal info to get free kit. Think government is watching. No Health Card=no free kit.

So very sad...suspect it is worse here in NH, where we have even fewer treatment options.

Exactly: Naloxone + safe injection sites + rehab funding are all required.
