I love this piece (& recommend Being Mortal to everyone). I question the narrative of the person who 'never worked a lick' getting Medicaid.

I live in TX. The eligibility requirements for Medicaid: be a child, be pregnant, be disabled, be a caretaker of a disabled person.
-
Yet I still hear complaints of moochers. I think we should ask for proof that such cases exist rather than accept them at face value.
-
I think they're more likely fantasies and bogeymen invented out of a chip on people's shoulders.
-
I feel confident stating there is no one in Texas on Medicaid that I should be envious of for a second.

Loved seeing the focus on Athens. Mrs. Hikida has a photo of you up in the Morrison-Gordon library, btw. Proud you call our town home!

It is surely a measure of civilisation. Free healthcare and free education should be amongst main priorities of GOP.

This piece is great, but so horrifying. I live in a rich, diverse, developed country w/ universal health care. There are no losers from it.

Health Care as right or as act of social solidarity, what we owe each other? Similar result but implications slightly different.

so...how many heart attacks do people need to have before we have unanimous support for universal healthcare?

The current debate fails to address the real needs.
#healthcare for all#healthcare quality waste. -
Dr. Gawande with his customary insight and elegance addresses the first issue. Love this piece!!

Amazing piece. Detailed, deeply respectful of all views. You ended up with Mark's story-thinking that's closest to your stance. Thank you

As you point out in your article, government created this mess and it's unlikely in my opinion to solve it.

I am an admirer of your work, Dr. Gawande, but there are no "rights" that require other people to give you their time or money.

Interesting read, but not nearly critical enough of the myth of self-reliance. Private insurance is just collectivism with profits.
