But I owe a correction. Student asked Q raising hard issue: does medicine have a place for people not great at communicating/reading others?

I think the answer is yes. But I did a major disservice saying that specialties that don’t see patients routinely don’t require such skills.

Such specialists rightly respond that team driven nature of medicine makes superb communication skills w colleagues & patients alike vital.

Emotional intelligence universally essential in medicine. Yet I suspect people with variation in even that can have value on our teams.

I completely agree. There are many examples of physicians, not considered "neurotypical", who have made immense contributions to medicine.

Most physicians I know r so arrogant & their status (income) so much higher than their team members - makes real communication challenging.

Emotional intelligence is alas universally mediocre in medicine. It has to do with education & people (men) choosing to become physicians
