I think the answer is yes. But I did a major disservice saying that specialties that don’t see patients routinely don’t require such skills.

Pathologists communicate with families, patients, and other physicians on a daily basis. It is central to what we do.

Pathologists absolutely must communicate effectively to ensure optimal patient care - our diagnoses inform treatment, prognoses, etc!

I think happiness in ones specialty and constructive feedback go a long way to improve communication in medicine

Have also seen unhappiness in a specialty make a bad communicator out of a good one

Need to relook at Med teams. Need skills matrix first and hire to that. Some skills require EI, some don't. No 1 person has all the skills.
-
Great point. Relevant to every field within and outside med. Need to break cycle of hiring whatever is available and then finding fit.

We all know people currently in medicine with this issue. Often (perhaps unfairly) labeled as difficult, rude, arrogant, and uncaring.
-
Some have managed to find area in which to either hide it or work with it, with varying degrees of success.
