I've seen teens age out of Medicaid then have their insulin pumps taken away, and forced 2 rely on 2 shots/day of generic insulin 2 survive

this is beyond words terrible.
@drtroystapleton -- would@TypeOneGrit be a good resource for teens finding tmslves in this situation? -
A low carbohydrate approach to managing type 1 diabetes typically lowers insulin requirements by 30-50%. FB group typeonegrit great resource

Same. In medical school saw a patient who came to the ED with stage IV cervical cancer because she had no insurance

Every single physician could tell hundreds of stories of disease left unchecked and untreated for fear of lack of coverage.

Happens all the time! Psychiatric patients (in & out of hospitals) because they're out of meds & no money for Rx refills.

My close friend Mike wouldn't go to a doctor for the pains in his leg and occasional moments of absentmindedness. They processed to fugue

states and total limb numbness. He's being treated by the Mayo Clinic now for what they have said is one

of the most rapidly advancing cases of MS they've seen. Basically, the five years he could afford a doctor cost at LEAST 20 years of life.

*couldn't afford - sorry.

I've seen patients with severe diabetic foot infections delay coming to see me for fear of the cost. Amputate more expensive than prevent

No worse feeling as a HC provider. We aim to prevent & minimize suffering. I have had to turn away uninsured
dz pts in need of procedures -
Many of these pts could have had their endstage disease caught & prevented earlier but lacked HC access to steer them in right direction

It is a mad world when we have to organize marches for Science or an entire sex, or defend fact that access go healthcare is a GOOD thing.

Absolutely. We unfortunately have to refuse blood/Marrow transplants in some w/o coverage with no other curative options. Tragic in America.
-
Bit of an extreme example given avg cost for a BMT is what - a million $$$? A better Pt would be basic prevent - not the invasive ones.
-
Actually no. Much much less on average. Autotransplant for lymphoma in many cases <$100K and curative. Allo more but cost effective, too.
-
I was speaking total cost to ~1y (should have clarified). So chemoTx, BMT, etc to 1 year out is < 100k?
-
Total costs of course vary from center to center and are opaque (many estimates list charges not actual costs to payers or centers). 1/2
