It will be great news if dexamethasone, a cheap steroid, really does cut deaths by 1/3 in ventilated patients with COVID19, but after all the retractions and walk backs, it is unacceptable to tout study results by press release without releasing the paper. https://www.recoverytrial.net/files/recovery_dexamethasone_statement_160620_final.pdf …

Also, what ICU is not using steroids in these patients already?

It’s seemingly the new normal to communicate trials this way. Not a good way to build trust in science.

THIS. this “thinking out loud” through press releases and statements is killing me during this time of distrust in expertise and science. 🤦‍♀️

If Covid has shown us anything, it's that all those years where we had to wait for ages for the "peer review" process to run its course, after submitting a paper, were worth it.

A result like this is pretty important - preprints with major claims have been getting pretty robust public peer review. So here, I think a preprint is enough - it would be analyzed in great detail in a day.

It makes sense that it might help with the later stages of the disease, but let’s not jump to conclusions.
