When large conglomerates like Hopkins and OhioHealth dominate the markets...this is the result. Of course, we have been pushing such consolidation for a decade, so not sure why anyone is surprised by the result.

The hospitals aren't the only conglomerates in this story. The article seems to paint Cigna as a friendly neighbour trying to get you a deal. Cigna is massive, and for profit. Hospital systems like NYP and John's Hopkins are nonprofit. Two sides to this I think.

No other segment of the economy is completely devoid of transparency about cost and quality.

Thank you for sharing. Agree it’s powerful and demonstrates one aspect of the many problems with our current healthcare system.

One solution is something you wrote about in 2015,

Deductibles/denials caused us to merge with a NYC hospital. The revenues doubled thanks to hospital contracts but the overhead has tripled. The losses are greater than before. Everyone lost including the payors. Is this what ACA had envisioned? Only God or Gawande can save us!

Time to take a closer look. Can we go back to basics?? Real exchange of service and payment should be between physician and patient. With every added layer, cost will be rising.

Our health care system is like a squid with a seizure disorder, there's a lot of moving parts but it's isn't going anywhere.

This is only thought-provoking if you feel that anyone has adequately defined quality in healthcare. In this case, nobody in their right minds should say that “the best we have” is actionable.

Why is Walmart an intermediary in someone’s health? The only unique comparative difference between US health care and all other nations combined... employer-based health benefits If you do anything as ABC CEO, please dismantle employer health benefits.

Actually there's one thing we can do, especially as we age. Reflect on our lives, talk to families & doctors, & prepare ourselves for death. I've been working through this for years, & I'm making arrangements to insure I won't go to hospital & can approach it based on MY values.
-
As a nation we need to start integrating death into our health discussions and sooner rather than later. Regardless of the articles written as if we can avoid it, we will not. So, let's explore.

Depends what you define as worst quality. Garbage in, garbage out.

On another recent experience with waste. Was at my PCP for a follow up and a CBC was ordered. Turns out I had other open orders. They performed all orders without reviewing with me-unfortunate as 3 of them were work related and done at another facility. Employer paid 2x

I agree this is disheartening. if employers of size really wanted to take on health plans to enforce quality and outcomes and value - they could :) Revenue to health plans almost entirely come from employers. They have to push for change.
